  30.           Day trips to Australia and weekend jaunts in the Milky way could
  31.        become a reality, thanks to the brainpower of Scottish inventor.

  33.           Sandy Kidd's discovery, which is set to revolutionize travel,
  34.        is already sending shock waves through the scientific establishment.
  35.        One of Britain's top physicists described it "mind boggling."

  37.           Mr. Kidd's work, researched in his garden shed, will make science
  38.        fiction writers dreams come true. Trips to Mars will take 34 hours
  39.        and the journey from London to Sydney will be reduced to a matter of
  40.        minutes.

  42.           The 51-year-old former apprentice toolmaker's development of a
  43.        Gyroscopic Propulsion process   has  stunned  academics  because  it
  44.        challenges Isaac Newton's Law of Motion.

  46.           He has  worked  out  that, by setting  gyroscopes  at  particular
  47.        angles, a lifting force that defies gravity is produced.

  49.           Mr. Kidd,  who  worked  for five years on his brainchild  at  his
  50.        Dundee home, is  now  moving  to  the heart of the space industry in
  51.        California where a massive investment program is already underway.

  53.           Dr. Harold Aspden senior visiting research fellow at Southampton
  54.        University, has seen the results  of  early  tests.  "Scientifically
  55.        speaking it is a bombshell," he says. I would not have believed this
  56.        if I had not seen it with my own eyes.

  58.           "It will totally revolutionize the travel industry. Taken to the
  59.        ultimate, we will have planes without jet engines and helicopters
  60.        without rotor blades."

  62.           Mr. Kidd is being financed by an Australian research company. A

  70.        spokesman said: "We  are  on to something really big. The next stage
  71.        is to power up Sandy's device in  California  with  the  prospect of
  72.        building a full-scale vehicle at the end of the day.  "Money  is  no
  73.        object, but we are determined that his work will get out."

  75.           At Imperial College, London, Professor Eric laithwaite, who has
  76.        followed Mr. Kidd's experiments, said: "I have always been convinced
  77.        it could be  done . . . and I like to see someone defeat the system.
  78.        He may be a long time perfecting it but I sure he will succeed."

  80.           Mr. Kidd made the final breakthrough  in this work highlighted in
  81.        the Sunday Express last year, about four weeks ago  in  a Laboratory
  82.        in Melbourne.

  84.           "There was just one thing I couldn't understand," said the former
  85.        RAF radar technician.   "I  had  worked round the problem until that
  86.        day when it dawned on me.
